How is Zohran Mamdani Doing in Office?

Zohran Mamdani’s first few months as the Mayor of New York City showcased an ambitious left-wing political agenda forming, especially related to housing and social policy. However, questions remain as they relate to execution capacity and political headwinds.

Before becoming Mayor, Mamdani was a New York State Assembly member. He helped push a few bills into becoming law. Critics of Mamdani say, though, that he only passed three bills and that was not enough. That being said, an analysis of his Albany voting record found that he supported nearly 3,600 bills, most of which became law. This, then, suggests that he was an active rank-and-file legislator even if his own proposals rarely moved forward politically. A critic of his showcases that he did not pass many bills in Albany, and he also missed out on an important voting procedure while he was in the process of campaigning for Mayor.

Once he took up office, Mamdani quickly moved to undo certain legislation put forth by Eric Adams. This included a directive to revoke all of the executive orders issued on or after September 26th, 2024 by Eric Adams. Mamdani also was the architect of new housing task forces such as the LIFT Task Force working to identify city-owned land for development, as well as creating another advisory body to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles that inflate costs and delay housing construction and leasing. Thus, Mamdani was working to streamline production rather than relying solely on rent regulation. Regarding social spending, Mamdani’s pledge is simple. He campaigned on a plan that offered universal childcare to every child from 6 weeks old to 5 years old. This program is estimated to be worth 6 billion dollars annually, requiring direct cooperation from New York State.

Politically, Mamdani has remained popular with progressives. However, he still remains polarizing, particularly with issues such as the Israel-Palestine conflict as well as policing. Mamdani, though, works to navigate this thoughtfully while also delivering on complex housing and childcare promises. This will then likely determine whether his time in office is considered to be transformative or routine.
