Governor Cuomo signed legislation on May 4, 2021, restoring the right to vote in all
elections for those on parole immediately and automatically.
Prior to 2018, New Yorkers on parole following a felony conviction could only have
their right to vote restored on an individual basis by a partial executive pardon, which
reinstated each authorized person’s capacity to register and cast a ballot.
A clear rule of law has been established by this new legislation: residents of the
community are entitled to vote in all local, state, and federal elections.
Once you are released from jail, you must re register to vote if you were previously
registered to vote before receiving a prison sentence.
