At Stuyvesant, where students pride themselves on intelligence, originality, and grit, the rise of artificial intelligence is starting to chip away at the very values that built this school’s reputation. We are taught to be thinkers, not just achievers. But with AI tools like ChatGPT now woven into the daily routines of students across New York City—including at Stuy—the line between learning and shortcutting is beginning to blur.
Ask around in the cafeteria, and you’ll hear it: AI is doing our brainstorming, outlining, coding, summarizing, even reflection writing. Some say it’s just a new form of a calculator—neutral and efficient. But calculators don’t compose your thesis statements or paraphrase your reading homework. The truth is, AI is slowly replacing the most important part of school: the struggle to think for yourself.
The most dangerous thing about AI isn’t that it’s wrong. It’s that it’s good enough. When you’re juggling five AP classes, a part-time internship, and college applications, it’s tempting to outsource your thinking. Why wrestle with an ethics prompt when you can get ChatGPT to generate a reasonable take in seconds? Why read the article when you can summarize it instantly?
This shift isn’t just about saving time—it’s about losing patience for the process of learning. When AI becomes the default first step, students stop engaging with the hard questions. We forget how to structure an argument, revise a clumsy paragraph, or read between the lines. In short, we stop thinking. And the more we rely on AI, the harder it becomes to trust our own intellectual instincts.
AI was supposed to democratize learning. But in practice, it’s reinforcing inequality. Students who already have strong writing skills use AI to polish their work, while students who struggle are tempted to let it write for them. The result? Less real improvement. Teachers can’t always tell the difference between a student’s voice and an algorithm’s, so they grade polished work higher—even when it’s artificially enhanced.
The city’s top public schools like Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech are ahead of the curve when it comes to integrating tech. But what about schools without the same resources or tech-savvy culture? In those classrooms, some students are afraid of using AI or aren’t allowed to at all. We’re creating a two-tiered system: students who grow up learning with AI, and those who are left behind or punished for touching it.
We talk a lot at Stuy about academic integrity. But how do you define cheating when the tools are so powerful and so subtle? If AI generates your outline, and you rewrite it in your own words—is that your work? If you feed it your draft and ask for improvements, whose writing is it? The gray areas are expanding, and most students and teachers don’t have clear guidelines.
At some point, AI use becomes so normalized that we forget what authentic work even looks like. We begin to value results—grades, test scores, college acceptances—over the process. The irony is that the students most harmed by this are the ones AI supposedly helps. We miss out on developing the grit, creativity, and persistence that no algorithm can simulate.
This isn’t a call to ban AI. But we need to be honest: AI is weakening student learning, especially when it’s used without reflection. Teachers need better tools to detect overreliance. Schools need clearer policies that distinguish support from substitution. And students—we need to decide who we want to become. Because if we keep letting machines think for us, we may graduate with perfect transcripts and empty minds.
In the end, the real danger isn’t that AI will replace students. It’s that we’ll stop realizing when it already has.
